Westgarth Alfred Duval(1885-1946)

Westgarth Alfred Duval was born on the 11th October 1875 at Buckhurst Hill, Essex. He was the son of Stephen Smith Duval, a mercantile clerk and Alice Peachey who were married in Madras, India in 1869.

He was admitted to Merton College and Wycliffe Hall, Oxford where he achieved a B.A. in 1900 and an M.A. in 1902.

He was ordained a deacon in 1901, by the Bishop of Chichester at Arundel Parish Church, and a priest in 1902. He was curate of All Souls', Eastbourne from 1901 to 1904 and All Saints, Hove from 1904 to 1909.

Westgarth married Mabel Aird in 1905 in Eastbourne, Sussex. They had one son, David, born 14th September 1914 in Hoxne, who later became vicar of Heathfield, Sussex.

On the 8th May 1909 he was instituted to the vicarage of Hoxne on the presentation of Baroness Bateman, of Oakley Park. He was appointed vicar of Denham, St. John in 1920. He was appointed Rural Dean of Hoxne Deanery and held this post from 1919 to 1923.

In 1927 he left Hoxne to become Rector of Folkington, near Polgate, Sussex, where he remained until he died.

He died on the 3rd March 1946 at St. Catherine's Nursing Home, Heathfield, Sussex, age 70, and was buried at Ocklynge Cemetery, Eastbourne.
